A cloud burst associated with hail and flash flood hit the Baltal base camp during Amarnath Yathra of Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal District.
A cloud burst kills three people including two children
Three persons were killed and eleven were injured in the cloudburst near the Baltal base camp. Among the killed, two of them were children. The government deployed army for relief and rescue operations. Some pilgrims are estimated to be trapped under landslide occurred near Baltal which was triggered by the cloud burst. The landslide occurred at three more places in that area. The road was opened after clearing the landslide. 780 pilgrims were shifted to army camp and another 1500 piligrims were taken to Bhandvas. 12 shops have been destroyed in the landslide. The Yatra has been stopped from Baltla and the traffic also was blocked in the highway in order to resume the search operations.
The official said that among the injured persons, one was seriously injured and this person was air lifted to Srinagar for a better treatment. The missing people were identified as Maiser, Anil Sahu, Ashaq Sahid Mir, Reyaz Ahmed Lone, Mustaq Ahmed, Ramdevi and Fayaz Ahmed Mir. The two children who lost their lives in the accident were of those who were working in the shops near the base camp. In a similar incident cloud bursts occurred on July 16 killing three people in Kulan village of Srinagar, Leh National High way. This route is used by pilgrims in Amarnath yathra.
The Amarnath Yathra has two ways to reach the destination. The shortest route is through the Baltla camp and most people used this route in their journey. The other route was through Phalagum which passes through 14500 feet high. This route takes more time to reach the destination. Cloudbursts frequently occur in this area in the rainy season. A cloudburst can create flash floods and landslide causing devastation.
